FOSTER + PARTNERS

Foster + Partners has never drawn a distinction between architecture and industrial design. The point of contact, the thing that you touch, is as important as the broader vision. The industrial design team has developed a wide range of products from door handles to wind turbines, from a fountain pen to the cabin of an executive jet, from a tap to the fit-out of an ocean yacht.

TWO GLAZES –

ONE STYLE

DATUM is available in two versions: One with a classic gloss glaze and the other featuring a matt satin glaze on the external face. The interplay between gloss and matt white expresses the unique tactility, purity and reflectivity of the material.

DESIGN

PROCESS

The development of a new porcelain form is always a multi-stage process that balances the priorities of creativity and design with functionality and technical feasibility. Achieving a pure, straight-lined geometry is one of the most exacting production challenges when using porcelain. Based on the detailed technical drawings from the Foster + Partners industrial design team, the master modellers at Porzellanmanufaktur FÜRSTENBERG fashioned plaster models or used 3D-printed models.

PUSHING BACK THE BOUNDARIES

OF THE POSSIBLE

Only a craft manufactory such as FÜRSTENBERG, with its 275 years’ experience in the art of porcelain and with employees who love and live for porcelain, can produce challenging designs such as DATUM in the highest quality.

VALUE CREATED BY

CRAFTSMANSHIP

DATUM’s linear form is extremely challenging to produce. The strict geometry of each individual piece requires several stages. Translating the design is a feat of craftsmanship, expertise and precision.

TWO BRANDS,

ONE AMBITION

The DATUM porcelain collection fuses groundbreaking product design with passionate craftsmanship. It combines the best of both worlds, a collaboration between the industrial designers at Foster + Partners and the experts at Porzellanmanufaktur FÜRSTENBERG, who have brought specialist expertise in their respective disciplines to the product.

A CANVAS FOR

CULINARY DELIGHTS

Throughout the development process, the design team sought advice from various internationally renowned chefs, helping to shape the form and functionality of the series. On account of its sophisticated stackability, DATUM also sets the stage for service.

PORCELAIN

FRENCH PRESS

A sophisticated highlight of the DATUM collection is the porcelain French press coffee pot. The celebrated French press requires the coffee filter to be pushed downwards in a straight line while remaining flush on all edges. Developing a porcelain cylinder with completely straight inner sides represented one of the major challenges for the porcelain manufacturer’s modellers.

TO GO

The ‘To Go’ double-walled take-away mug, made entirely from porcelain, is the first of its kind from FÜRSTENBERG and underscores the new demand for great taste on the go. The two-and-a-half millimetre-thick body is astonishingly light. By virtue of the double-walled design, drinks retain their temperature for longer.
